What is good about having a pet?
“Start nurturing what Allah placed in your care, whether it walks on two legs or four. Heal gently, build patiently, and let compassion be the foundation of everything you grow.”
There is a quiet, healing magic in the presence of a pet, the kind that softens the human heart, steadies the mind, and fills the empty corners of life with warmth. Whether it is a cat curling into your lap, a bird singing you into a softer morning, or even a gentle creature you care for outdoors, the bond between human and animal has always been part of the way Allah designed creation, interconnected, healing, and purposeful.
1. The Psychological Perspective .. How Pets Heal the Mind and Heart..
● They regulate your emotions..
Studies show that the presence of a pet naturally reduces cortisol, the body’s stress hormone, while increasing serotonin and oxytocin, the “connection” and “happiness” chemicals. Simply petting an animal can lower your heart rate, calm anxiety, and ease feelings of loneliness.
A pet does not judge you. It does not rush you. It does not demand explanations. It simply exists beside you in unconditional companionship, and that is psychologically grounding in a world that constantly demands productivity and perfection.
● They create routine and responsibility..
Human beings thrive on structure. Having a pet, feeding it, cleaning for it, watching over it, creates a rhythm to your day that brings emotional stability. It gives the mind something positive to focus on, creating a sense of purpose, especially in moments of overwhelm or sadness.
● They counter loneliness..
Loneliness is one of the biggest psychological struggles of modern life. Pets offer consistent companionship, presence, and a sense of being needed. A pet does not need you to be “fine.” It just needs you to show up and in that showing up, many people end up saving themselves.
● They help you process grief and trauma..
People recovering from heartbreak, loss, or emotional exhaustion often find healing through animals because pets offer silent compassion. They sit with you in your hardest moments. They do not ask questions, they simply exist as a soft reminder that you are not alone.
● They increase empathy..
Caring for an animal naturally heightens emotional intelligence. You become more aware, more gentle, more attuned, not just to your pet, but to the people around you.
2. The Islamic Perspective.. Mercy, Reward, and the Sunnah of Compassion..
Islam does not just condone kindness to animals, it elevates it to an act of worship.
● Mercy to animals is a path to Allah’s mercy..
The Prophet ﷺ said..
“Show mercy to those on the Earth, and the One above the heavens will show mercy to you.” (Tirmidhi)
Even feeding or quenching the thirst of an animal is considered sadaqah/charity. Every small act, placing water, cleaning their space, comforting them, becomes a moment of reward in the sight of Allah.
● A woman entered Jannah because she cared for a thirsty dog..
The famous Hadith shows how Allah values compassion to animals..
A woman saw a thirsty dog, took off her shoe, filled it with water, and gave the animal drink. Because of this small act of mercy.. Allah forgave her and admitted her to Paradise.
● Animals are part of Allah’s creation that glorifies Him..
Allah says in the Qur’an..
“And there is not a single thing except that it glorifies His praise.” (17:44)
Your pet is not “just an animal”, it is a creation that remembers Allah in ways you cannot see. Caring for such a creation is a form of honoring the Creator.
● The Prophet ﷺ loved and protected animals..
He ﷺ gently corrected companions when they overburdened animals, separated mothers from their young, or caused unnecessary harm. Kindness to animals was part of the prophetic character.
● A pet teaches ihsan/to do good beautifully..
Having a pet teaches patience, compassion, gentleness, and responsibility, qualities deeply rooted in the Islamic concept of ihsan, excellence in character and worship.
Having a pet is not just about having something cute in your home, it is about nurturing a bond that enriches your emotional world and elevates your spiritual character.
Psychologically, pets heal the human mind. Spiritually, caring for them polishes the human heart.
They remind you that love does not always come from people, sometimes it comes with paws, feathers, or tiny beating hearts that Allah places in your life for reasons bigger than you can see.
